Old Scars, Contemporary Perspectives
It is near impossible to attempt to grasp the complexities of China’s people, history, and traditions. It would also be completely irrational to think that one could justly summarize the multifaceted and abundant story of one of the planet’s most ancient civilizations. However, I will attempt to tell a small part of the story in order to help the world better understand the contributions of China in both art and politics, beyond Western stereotypes. This catalogue will begin in the late 1800s, at the end of the last dynasty until the end of the Cultural Revolution in the late 1970s. This story will be told primarily through artworks created by modern and contemporary China born artists produced post-1980 to analyze the effects that their surroundings had on the production of art, how art was used to tell stories, and to express the change in perspectives that come with the passing of time. Journeying through nine galleries the viewer will explore the modern history of China and evaluate the social climate of the country before and after several wars. Secondly, observe how Mao Zedong slowly came into power and fell from status. The last gallery will ponder on the future of China, both after Mao and today. This presentation is created to challenge many narrow Western perspectives and ideas about China, while also pushing the viewer to shatter the lens of their own cultural biases.
